Box Score Dover, Del. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team put up a physical fight and gained two goals in the second half but were upended 3-2 by the Wesley College Wolverines on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference play.
The Wolverines (9-7-1, 6-2-0 CAC) were able to capture a goal first in the 39th minute of play when first-year forward Adrian Coverdale (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) netted his goal off an assist from first-year midfielder Danny Garza (Selbyville, Del./Indian River).
The Seahawks (6-8-2, 2-5-1 CAC) put up a tremendous battle with eight shots to Wesley's seven to finish the half. The Seahawks went head-to-head and earned five corner kicks to complete the first period of the game while Wesley recorded four.
The physicality of the game showed in the first 45 minutes as the Seahawks tallied six fouls and the Wolverines attacked with seven.
Coverdale would strike again in the 53rd minute with his 10th goal of the season assisted by junior midfielder Will Mileski (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and the Wolverines would top the lead at 2-0.
The second half would showcase a competitive Seahawk team as they came ready to score. In the 78th minute, junior forward Zach Fontenot (Middletown, Md./Middletown) found the back of the net after a pass from first-year midfielder Juwan Kearson (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) for the first Seahawk goal.
Kearson was out to help his team as he had another perfect pass in the 80th minute and found junior midfielder Nick Tait (Silver Spring, Md./Sandy Spring Friends School) for the game's equalizer.
Shortly after the Seahawks tied the game, Mileski made good on a penalty kick at 81:54 to give Wesley the one-goal win.
St. Mary's had a total of 16 shot attempts; however, that would not be enough to defeat the Wolverines. The Seahawks rounded out the game with nine corner kicks to the Wolverines' five. Wesley was on the attack as they concluded the match with 18 fouls and two yellow cards.
St. Mary's will be back in action on Wednesday, October 28 as they take on York College of Pennsylvania (9-6-2, 6-1-1 CAC) on the road at 4:00 p.m. in its regular-season finale.
