Box Score Leonardtown, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team showed their aggressive offensive skills and put up four goals to Penn State Harrisburg's zero to take their second Capital Athletic conference win on a rainy and gloomy Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks (4-5-0, 2-0-0 CAC) took the lead late in the first half when senior forward Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) took advantage of a pass from sophomore defender Beth Walton (Fallston, Md./Fallston) to set the tone and lead 1-0 at 35:46.
Senior goalkeeper Samantha Kutcher (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) held strong in the first half saving five of the shots on goal and only allowing one. The Seahawks had an overall total of 22 shots to the Lions' 11. Kutcher finished with eight stops for Penn State Harrisburg (2-6-1, 1-2-0 CAC).
The second half of the game was where the Seahawks took full control of the field. Sawyer again claimed another scoring opportunity in the 72nd minute as she capitalized on a swift pass from the left off the foot of senior forward Jess Konecke (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard). This was Sawyer's conference-leading 13th goal of the season.
Konecke was able to help her team with one assist before claiming her first goal of the year in the 73rd minute off an assist from Sawyer. The final goal of the game would be made by sophomore forward Chiko Kulemeka (College Park, Md./Elizabeth Seton) following a sharp strike to the goal from first-year forward Haley David (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg).
St. Mary's will be back in action on the road as they travel to the Eastern Shore to take on the Salisbury University Sea Gulls (8-2, 2-0 CAC), who are ranked eighth in the South Atlantic region, on Wednesday, October 7 at 4:00 p.m. in another CAC tilt.
