St. Mary's City, Md. – St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swimming captured nine of 11 events in claiming two victories in their home- and season-opener Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks (2-0, 1-0 CAC) tallied a 146-59 non-conference win over Goucher College as well as a 135-68 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Marymount (Va.) University.
Four Seahawks collected three gold medals – senior captains Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston), junior Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown), and sophomore Kieran Broder (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) – in leading the team to convincing wins.
Speer was part of both winning relays – the 400 medley (3:41.37) and the 400 freestyle (3:19.31) – and added a gold medal in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.14. Burgess was a member of the winning 400 medley relay and then picked up wins in the 1,000 freestyle (10:21.51) and the 200 butterfly (2:00.45).
Walchuck contributed to the team's stellar performance with a gold medal in the 200 freestyle (1:48.00) before leading the 1-2-3 sweep in the 500 freestyle. He won the event with a time of 5:05.76. Walchuck wrapped up the meet as the lead on the winning 400 free relay.
Broder started the meet as a member of the winning 400 medley relay followed by claiming first in the 200 individual medley (2:05.89) and the 200 breaststroke (2:19.86). Senior captain Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown) was the lead-off swimmer on the winning 400 medley relay before tallying a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:07.44) to lead St. Mary's in the event.
First-year Colin Cassady (Phoenix, Md./Calvert Hall) anchored the winning 400 freestyle relay in his collegiate debut while gaining second-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (22.38) and the 100 freestyle (50.00).
Junior Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood) earned a gold medal as part of the winning 400 freestyle relay and also had a fourth-place finish in the 50 freestyle (22.87) while placing fifth in the 100 freestyle (51.69). Sophomore Max Madden (Cape St. Clair, Md./Broadneck) was part of the 1-2-3 sweep in the 500 freestyle as Madden came in second (5:12.43).
St. Mary's will be back in the pool next Friday, November 6 as the Seahawks welcome Randolph-Macon College to campus for a non-conference dual meet at 4:00 p.m.
