Box Score Salisbury, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team picked up their third Capital Athletic Conference win on the road against the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University, advancing their conference record to 3-0 on Wednesday evening.
Senior forward Jess Konecke (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) secured the road win for the St. Mary's with a late goal in the 85th minute. Konecke fired in a shot from the left side of the box which curved into the top right off the post.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Larkin (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) saved two of Salisbury's three shots on goal in the Seahawks' second straight win. Junior Alesha Seifert (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) turned away four of the six shots on goal but the Sea Gulls saw their win streak halted at five.
The Seahawks (5-5, 3-0 CAC) were able to start with a 1-0 lead in the first half. Senior forward Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) scored in the 23rd minute from 20 yards out with a shot from the left side of the field. This gave Sawyer her league-best 14th goal of the season and ranks her fifth in the St. Mary's record books for most goals in a single-season.
Salisbury (8-3, 2-1 CAC), however, would not go down easy. Sophomore midfielder Ruthie Lucas (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) capitalized on a pass from senior midfielder Samantha Beck (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) from the right side to the middle where Lucas took her strike into the top of the net and tied up the game at 50:56.
The Sea Gulls tallied a 10-8 advantage in shots and edged St. Mary's, 5-4, in corner kicks.
The Seahawks will be back on the field at Seahawk Stadium this Saturday, October 10 and will take on the University of Mary Washington at 2:00 p.m. Saturday's game is the team's Breast Cancer Awareness Game and along with wearing pink jerseys for the game, St. Mary's will be selling pink t-shirts for $10 at the game and throughout the entire month of October.
