Chestertown, Md. – St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swimming stumbled against the nationally-ranked and undefeated Washington College Shoremen (4-0) on Friday afternoon, falling 137-67 in non-conference action.
The Seahawks (4-3) brought in two gold medals in individual events. Senior captain Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) earned the first gold medal for St. Mary's in the 200 freestyle (1:49.38) Speer also anchored the second-place 200 freestyle relay (1:30.23) and posted the best 50 freestyle split of 21.64. Competing in the relay team were first-year Colin Cassady (Phoenix, Md./Calvert Hall), senior captain Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown), and junior Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood).
Junior Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) grabbed a first-place spot as well in the 100 freestyle (48.81), notching nine points for the Seahawks. Walchuck also captured a second-place finish individually in the 1,000 freestyle (10:23.33) and placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.65).
Lilley, sophomore Kieran Broder (Olney, Md./Georgetown Prep), senior captain Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston), and Cassady made up the second-place team in the 200 medley relay (1:42.57). Cassady had the best split coming in at 22.81 while also coming in second individually in the 50 freestyle (22.73).
Burgess received a silver medal in the 500 freestyle (4:59.45) and took third in the 400 individual medley (4:25.63), contributing 11 points to the Seahawks. Broder collected another silver medal in 100 butterfly (55.85) plus a bronze in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.15).
The Seahawks will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, November 14 as they take on Frostburg State University in Capital Athletic Conference action at home at 1:00 p.m.
