Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team fall short of a win Tuesday afternoon, ending their 2015 season in the semifinal game of the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament with a 2-1 loss to York College of Pennsylvania.
St. Mary's closes out its 2015 campaign with a 10-7 (8-1 CAC) record, marking the first time since 2008 that the Seahawks have collected 10 or more wins. The team did set a school single-season record for most conference wins with eight.
The second-seeded Seahawks came out attacking in the first half, taking four shots in the first half. Sixth-seeded York fired off six shots in the first half but first-year goalkeeper Katie Flores (Towson, Md./Towson) successfully saved two.
The Spartans (8-10) battled hard against St. Mary's and capitalized with two goals in the first half. Senior Jamie Sokolis (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) finished off a sharp pass from first-year midfielder Baylee DiPietro (Stevenson, Md./Kent Island) from the left corner of the goal with a header at 19:07 for an early 1-0 YCP lead.
York then stretched its lead to 2-0 in the 31st minute behind a goal from first-year midfielder Emily Huey (Pocomoke City, Md./Snow Hill). Huey received a pass from sophomore forward Corie Elliott (Laurel, Md./Delmar) and found the back of the net for her fourth of the season. The Spartans headed into intermission with a two-goal advantage.
The Seahawks continued fighting and started the second stanza on the offensive. In the first minute of the half, senior forward Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) controlled a loose ball, dribbled past a Spartan defender, and netted her 18th of the season as senior goalkeeper Kate Lutte (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) came out to make a play on the ball.
Both teams held steady with their offensive pressure; however, the defensive lines for both sides stood strong against the challenges. Flores finished the match with four saves as the Seahawks saw their four-game win streak snapped. Lutte also picked up four stops in the match in helping York continue its Cinderella run through the CAC Tournament.
Both the Spartans and St. Mary's ended with nine shots for the game while the Seahawks posted a 6-0 margin in corner kicks.
