Seahawk Men's Swimming Fourth as CAC Championships Kick Off

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team opened up the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Swimming Championship on Friday and currently stand fourth in the six-team field with 104 points.

The three-day event will wrap up on Sunday, February 22nd with the crowning of the team champion. The University of Mary Washington Eagles is pursuing its 21st overall (15th consecutive) conference championship title and hold the No. 1 spot in the team standings with 268 after claiming gold in all five events.

Sophomore Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) picked up the Seahawks' highest finish of the night in the 200 individual medley. Walchuck placed fourth in the event in 1:57.38 while senior captain Bobby Witkop (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) took eighth in 2:00.89. First-year Kieran Broder (Olney, Md./Georgetown Prep) placed 13th in 2:01.61 after taking fourth in the consolations.

The foursome of junior Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown), Witkop, sophomore Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood), and junior Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) claimed a fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:28.04.

Junior Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston) led St. Mary's in the 500 freestyle with a seventh-place finish in 4:48.35.

First-year Max Madden (Cape St. Clair, Md./Broadneck) placed 10th in 4:53.61 and junior Kian Karimi (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) was 11th in 4:57.16 after taking second and third, respectively, in the consolation finals. Sophomore Andrew Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) tallied a 13th-place finish in the event in 5:02.13.

Lilley finished the night with a seventh-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 21.86 while Speer added a 12th-place finish in 22.27.

The Seahawks, unfortunately, did not score any points in the last event of the night – the 400 medley relay – as the foursome was disqualified for a false start.
