Box Score Dover, Del. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team posted their third straight win (and second Capital Athletic Conference victory in a row) behind senior attackman Eric Simon's (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) four-goal performance Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks notched a 15-6 triumph over Wesley College amidst snow flurries.
Simon led all scorers with his four goals while midfielders Greg Louzan (Ellicott City, Md./St. Paul's School) and Ian Riehl (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) each contributed two scores and junior captain Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville) dished a pair of assists.
Simon and Louzan gave St. Mary's a 2-0 lead at 11:14 before Wesley's senior James Moss (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) snuck one past junior Joe Casey (Annapolis, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) at 10:36. After that, it was all St. Mary's as the Seahawks rattled off five straight for a 7-1 advantage after one period of play.
St. Mary's (3-4, 2-1 CAC) stretched it to a 6-0 run as first-year attackman Colin Dempsey (Baltimore, Md./Boys' Latin) netted the first goal of the second quarter. Junior midfielder Sam Seibert (New Castle, Del./William Penn) tallied a man-up goal to trim the lead to 8-2 at 8:13. The Seahawks responded with three unanswered goals for a nine-goal advantage.
Junior midfielder John Chenault (Laurel, Md./Pallotti) made it an 11-3 SMCM lead at halftime as Chenault scored the final goal of the half with 1:26 left. Simon led all scorers with three goals at intermission while Louzan chipped in his two goals in the first half.
Only two goals were scored in the third period as Riehl and Simon found the back of the net. At the other end of the field, the Seahawk defense held Wesley scoreless by limiting the Wolverines to just four shots. Wesley edged St. Mary's, 3-2, in the final quarter as the Wolverines picked up the game's final three goals, including a pair from junior midfielder Jack Redefer (Lewes, Del./Sussex Tech).
St. Mary's outshot the hosts, 44-27, while ground balls were even at 40 apiece. Wesley (5-3, 0-2 CAC) won the battle at the X, 15-of-25, as senior midfielder Jack O'Neill (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) took all 25 face-offs.
Casey finished the day with five saves, three ground balls, and one caused turnover for the win while first-year Josh Dean (Glen Burnie, Md./Pallotti) came up with 17 stops in 52 minutes as the Wolverines are still searching for their first CAC win of the season.
St. Mary's looks to continue its winning ways on Wednesday, April 1st when the Seahawks welcome York College of Pennsylvania for another conference tilt at 4:00 p.m.
