St. Mary's Baseball Drops CAC Twin Bill to Marymount

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

St. Mary's City, Md. – Hopes of a spot in the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Baseball Championship Tournament were dashed Saturday afternoon as the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team fell twice to Marymount (Va.) University. Marymount posted winning scores of 9-4 and 9-2 for the sweep.

St. Mary's (8-19, 5-13 CAC) needed to sweep plus help in order to have a shot at playoffs. The Seahawks received the necessary when Christopher Newport University swept York College of Pennsylvania but St. Mary's was unable to bring home the sweep.

In the first game, St. Mary's tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning when senior Paul Roemer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) led off with a triple to center and then came home on senior DH Matt Holdefer's (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) sacrifice fly.

Marymount (13-13, 9-9 CAC) claimed a 4-1 lead with a three-run fifth inning before adding two more in the seventh for a five-run advantage. The Seahawks cut the lead to 6-4 with three runs in the seventh. Senior captain Brad Dioguardo's (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) bunt single scored Holdefer who led off the inning with a double. Senior captain Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) then connected on a two-out single to bring home Dioguardo and sophomore Zach Rowe (Annapolis, Calvert Hall).

The Saints then tallied three in the top of the ninth while junior relief pitcher Charlie DiGiulian (Annandale, Va./Bishop O'Connell) pitched two shutout innings to preserve the win for Marymount.

Dioguardo and Eaker each picked up two hits to lead St. Mary's at the plate while senior captain Patrick Watson (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) suffered the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits with three walks and one strikeout in 4.2 innings.

Junior Ryan Blake (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) paced the Saints at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort as Blake was a home run shy of the cycle. First-year Collin Bazemore (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) notched his first win of the season as Bazemore struck out six and walked three in 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits.

The nightcap was all Marymount as the Saints opened up with a six-run second inning and then stretched their lead to 9-0 with single runs in the third, fourth, and seventh innings. The Seahawks avoided the shutout with two runs in the ninth as Watson scored one as a pinch runner on an error and sophomore Anthony Cangelosi (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) crossed home plate on junior Connor Goodie's (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) second double of the season.

Junior catcher Hayden Ferington (Centreville, Va./Westfield) paced the Seahawks at the plate with two hits each while junior LHP Michael O'Neill (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) took the loss, yielding six runs on four hits in 1.2 innings with five walks and two strikeouts.

Sophomore Ben Berczek (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) pitched 7.0 scoreless innings, scattering just three hits while fanning 10 Seahawk batters and walking four. Berczek helped his own cause by going 1-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and a stolen base. Sophomore Karlis Graubics (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) paced the Saints at the plate with a 3-for-5 effort, including a triple.
