Elizabethtown Nips St. Mary's Women's Soccer in Double Overtime

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior captain Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) found the back of the net three times but the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team's rally fell just short as Elizabethtown College pulled out a 4-3 double overtime victory Sunday afternoon.

Senior Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) was the hero for the Elizabethtown Blue Jays (2-2-1) as Cerankowski was at the edge of the box, half-facing the goal, when she took a quick chip which seemed headed over the goal but just snuck in over the outstretched hand of first-year goalkeeper Katie Flores (Towson, Md./Towson).

Cerankowski's first goal of the season came with 6:52 left in the second extra period, giving Etown its second straight win. Elizabethown edged St. Mary's, 19-16, in shots for the game while corner kicks were even at five apiece.

The Blue Jays established a commanding 3-0 lead with 34:50 remaining in the first half as senior forward Lauren Berry (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) scored two consecutive goals at 9:47 and then again at 12:03. Berry's first goal was a free kick at the edge of the box while her second came off a cross from junior midfielder Maddie Burkhardt (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield).

Sophomore Lindsay Hoagland (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) gave Etown the three-goal lead at 34:50 as Hoagland connected with Cerankowski for her second tally of the season. Sawyer cut the deficit to two at 38:32 as she corralled a leading pass from first-year Liz Fitch (Kingsville, Md./Perry Hall), dodged senior keeper Dana Robidoux (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville), and fired into the empty net.

In the second stanza, Sawyer picked up where she had left in the first half and closed the gap to one at 70:50 as she collected a diagonal pass from junior Claire Kostelnik (Los Angeles, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart) inside the box and finished into the lower left corner.

Sawyer sent the contest into extra periods with her sixth goal of the season off another feed from Kostelnik with 8:11 remaining in regulation. Cerankowski had an opportunity to end the game in regulation but her shot at 87:57 went off the crossbar.

In overtime, the Blue Jays fired off four shots to St. Mary's three while the Seahawks earned a corner kick in the first extra period. Flores recorded six saves as St. Mary's saw its two-match win streak snapped while Robidoux registered three stops 103:10 minutes of action.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Wednesday, September 16 when St. Mary's welcomes No. 5 Johns Hopkins University (2-2-1) to Seahawk Stadium for a non-conference match at 4:00 p.m.
