Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team stumbled and could not get past a strong Johns Hopkins University team, who are ranked No. 5 in the Mid-Atlantic region, on a hot Wednesday afternoon falling by a 6-1 score.
The Seahawks (2-4) fought hard in the first half and only allowed two goals from the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays (3-2-1). Senior midfielder Maryalice McKenna (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) fired the Blue Jays' first shot in the 16th minute. This goal was followed by freshman forward Kristen Hori (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani School) in the 35th minute for the Blue Jays.
The Seahawks would not be left behind in the scoring in the first half. Senior forward Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) put up a solid battle at the goal and dribbled the ball in for a shot in the 41st minute after receiving a pass from junior captain Claire Kostelnik (Los Angeles, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart).
Sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Larkin (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) had a fierce showing for the Seahawks. In the first half, Larkin saved a penalty kick off sophomore forward Bailey Monaco (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay). She also saved back to back strikes on goal in the 27th minute. Larkin finished with 11 saves for the game on 17 Blue Jay shots on goal.
The Blue Jays acquired their tremendous lead in the second half when they scored four goals on 13 shots while holding St. Mary's to just one shot over the final 45 minutes. Hori was a key player for the Blue Jays, tallying a hat trick and one assist in the game. Hori played well off teammate junior forward Alexa Rangecroft (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrenceville), who had an assist in the first half and a goal in the second.
The Seahawks will be back in action this Saturday, September 19 as they travel to Baltimore to play the Moravian College Greyhounds (1-3-1) at a neutral site. The game will be played on Homewood Field at Johns Hopkins. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
