Box Score Salisbury, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team netted the game-tying goal in the 67th minute to force overtime Saturday afternoon but Rutgers University-Camden pulled out the win just under four minutes into the first extra period. Rutgers-Camden posted the 1-0 overtime victory during the first day of action at the Elmer Lord Memorial Classic hosted by Salisbury University.
Three minutes and forty-eight seconds went by in the first overtime period before St. Mary's sophomore goalkeeper Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) was ejected from the game with a red card and the Scarlet Raptors were awarded the decisive penalty kick.
Senior captain Connor Hurff (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) buried his penalty kick into the right side of the net past substitute keeper Ben Meyers (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson). Hurff's third goal of the season propelled Rutgers-Camden, who received votes (unofficially No. 33) in the NSCAA Division III Preseason Rankings, to its third win of 2015.
The Raptors edged St. Mary's (1-1) in shots, 18-15, but the Seahawks dominated corner kicks by a 9-1 margin, including seven in the first half.
Haussler made three saves before his ejection while first-year James Brett (Palmyra, N.J./Palmyra) picked up eight stops for the Rutgers-Camden win.
Rutgers-Camden claimed a 1-0 lead at 16:27 as Hurff assisted on senior forward Mike Ryan's (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) fourth score of the season. Camden's lead held through halftime as Brett turned away five of St. Mary's nine first-half shots.
Junior captain Nick Tait (Silver Spring, Md./Sandy Spring Friends) put the Seahawks on the scoreboard at 66:23 as Tait volleyed a rebound inside the six past Brett.
St. Mary's will be back in action tomorrow, wrapping up action at the Elmer Lord Memorial Classic. The Seahawks will now face U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, who lost 2-1 to Salisbury today, at 1:00 p.m.
