Box Score Fayetteville, N.C. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team is still searching for their first win of the new season after dropping a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss at Methodist University Saturday afternoon.
St. Mary's (0-2) withstood a persistent Methodist (2-0) offense, which fired off 16 shots and earned five corner kicks, and held the Monarchs scoreless through 90 minutes of regulation. In her first career start, first-year goalkeeper Katie Flores (Towson, Md./Towson) picked up 11 saves, including nine in regulation, to keep the Seahawks in the game.
Shots were even in the first half at seven apiece while Methodist owned the slight 2-1 edge in corners. The second half saw the Monarchs control time of possession, outshooting St. Mary's, 6-1, and posting a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
First-year forward Amanda Hayes (Trinity, Fla./Mitchell) notched the golden goal at 96:01 for her second score of the season.
The Seahawks finished the match with eight shots and one corner kick as senior Taylor Ross (Elon, N.C./Western Alamance) collected just two stops for her second shutout in 2015.
St. Mary's hopes to record its first win of the season tomorrow when the Seahawks stop in Danville, Virginia to take on Averett University, who played Emory & Henry College to a scoreless draw in its season-opener. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
