St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team fell to the McDaniel College Green Terror on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader. St. Mary's (3-5) dropped 12-6 and 12-3 (5) decisions to the Green Terror (2-0).
In the first game, St. Mary's walked away with six runs, nine hits, and five RBI. The Seahawks also cracked three doubles in the opening game.
The Seahawks kept up with McDaniel in the first three innings of the game. In the bottom of the third, St. Mary's tied up the game at 3-3 with a pair of runs. Sophomore OF Bennett Garner (Bowie, Md./Bowie) scored after senior SS Hunter Mohler (La Plata, Md./Bishop McNamara) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Junior 2B Zach Rowe (Davidsonville, Md./Calvert Hall) advanced on the play and then came home when senior DH Hayden Ferington (Centreville, Va./Westfield) collected his second RBI with a single to leftfield.
McDaniel had strong fourth and sixth innings, scoring four runs in each inning to take a significant six-run lead over the Seahawks. Senior 3B Marty Windisch (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) tallied three runs, two hits, and an RBI while senior catcher Cameron Bahr (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) grasped three runs, three hits, and three RBI to pace the Green Terror.
The Seahawks tried to catch up in the sixth, tacking on three more runs on three hits. Mohler registered a double in the inning. Also obtaining doubles in the game were Rowe and junior 3B Colin Thatcher (Germantown Md./Seneca Valley).
Rowe and Ferington finished the first half of the doubleheader with two hits each while Ferington picked up two RBI to pace the Seahawks. Redshirt junior Ben Goldsmith (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) took the loss on the mound as Goldsmith (0-2) gave up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
McDaniel carried its momentum into the second game, upending the Seahawks, 12-3, in five innings as the game was called due to darkness. St. Mary's completed the game with three RBI and one hit.
First-year OF Stetson Cox (Fallston, Md./Loyola Blakefield) connected on the team's lone hit with his single to centerfield in the bottom of the fourth while Ferington, Mohler, and sophomore Matt Bieler (Bowie, Md./Bowie) all contributed one run each. Senior Garrett Pope (Port Republic, Md./Calvert) suffered the loss as Pope (1-1) allowed nine runs (five earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts and one walk in 2.2 innings.
McDaniel finished with 12 runs, 14 hits, and 10 RBI as the Green Terror open up the 2016 campaign with a 2-0 mark. Senior OF Sean Sivo (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) achieved three RBI in leading his team.
The Seahawks will be back in action tomorrow (Sunday, February 28) at 11:30 a.m. with a rescheduled doubleheader with Gwynedd Mercy University at the Hawk's Nest.
