Lexington, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team opened the new campaign with a doubleheader against the Washington and Lee University Generals, being outscored 6-2 in 17 innings of action on Saturday.
St. Mary's (0-2) stumbled in the first game to the Generals, falling 3-0 in a tough defensive game. The Generals (2-0) scored early in the first inning when senior outfielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) doubled to left field, bringing in sophomore third baseman Paul Diven (Sparrows Point, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and first-year infielder Chadwick Feeley (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal School).
The Seahawks would record their first hit of the game in the top of the third when junior first baseman Anthony Cangelosi (Olney, Md./Our Lady of Good) singled through the right side. Likewise, seniors Hayden Ferington (Centreville, Va./Westfield) and Connor Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) also collected hits for St. Mary's. Ferington would find a double down the right field line in the fourth while Goodie would single down the right field line in the fifth.
W&L would go hitless until the fifth inning when junior catcher Cory Paton (Ashton, Md./St. Johns College) singled to left field. The Generals' sophomore Robey Smalley (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Tuscaloosa Academy) notched an RBI at the bottom of the sixth when Smalley hit a grounder to second base that advanced Diven home, locking in the shutout win.
Junior captain Ben Goldsmith (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) would take the loss as Goldsmith (0-1) tallied three strikeouts at the plate in five innings. The Seahawks picked up a total of seven hits to Washington and Lee's eight.
The second game was a close one and saw the Seahawks dropping a 3-2 decision to W&L in extra innings. The Generals won the nightcap with a walk-off walk in the eighth when senior catcher Riley Stout (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) drew a walk with bases loaded and one out, bringing in junior first baseman Jonny Swenson (Newnan, Ga./Newnan) for the game-winning run.
St. Mary's started the scoring in the second inning. First-year outfielder Lucas Kraft's (Boyds, Md./Clarksburg) single through the left side led to two RBI as senior Hunter Mohler (La Plata, Md./Bishop McNamara) and sophomore outfielder Matt Bieler (Bowie, Md./Bowie) both scored for a 2-0 lead.
Washington and Lee would have a total of six hits and connected to score in the bottom of the sixth to tie up the game. Sophomore outfielder Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) sacrificed to centerfield, bringing home sophomore Austin Crane (Darien, Conn./Fairfield College Prep). After a wild pitch advanced Feeley to second, Stout (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) singled up the middle and drove in Feeley.
The Seahawks were able to hold the Generals defensively in the bottom of the seventh, recording three consecutive outs with the last one resulting from a strikeout by junior pitcher Nick Raimondo (Davidsonville, Md./South River).
Senior Garrett Pope (Port Republic, Md./Calvert) logged four strikeouts in six innings for the Seahawks while Raimondo (0-1) had two as he suffered the loss.
The Seahawks will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for the final game in this weekend's three-game series. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
