Lexington, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team stumbled against the Washington and Lee University Generals in a tough game where they were outnumbered, 6-2, in Lexington, Va., on Sunday afternoon.
In a game where both teams were fighting hard defensively, St. Mary's (0-3) would be the first to score in the top of the fourth inning. Junior infielder Colin Thatcher (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) grounded out to second base thus leading senior catcher Connor Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) to home plate for the first run of the game.
Thatcher would pace the game for the Seahawks, recording two RBI. The Seahawks would conclude the game with six hits to the Generals' seven.
The W&L Generals (3-0) would respond quickly in the bottom of the fourth inning, setting a lead of 4-1. Sophomore outfielder Robey Smalley (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Tuscaloosa Academy) singled through the right side, picking up two RBI and bringing home sophomore outfielder Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) and first-year infielder Chadwick Feeley (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal School).
The next run for the Generals would come after junior third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) stole second base and a throwing error by the Seahawks led junior outfielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) to score and Weston to third. Directly after, junior first baseman Johnny Swenson (Newnan, Ga./Newnan) doubled to left center and scored Weston for the fourth run of the game.
The Seahawks would answer in the sixth inning, cutting their deficit in half when Thatcher connected on a sacrifice fly that lined out to left field and senior infielder Hunter Mohler (La Plata, Md./Bishop McNamara) scored the final run for St. Mary's.
W&L would not score again until the bottom of the seventh. Feeley would single out to left field to bring in sophomore shortstop Austin Crane (Darien, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) and Weston.
Junior pitcher Jimmy Robey (Kensington, Md./Gonzaga) ended the game with two strikeouts and pitched six innings, receiving the loss for the Seahawks.
The Seahawks will be back in action with their home opener against Gwynedd Mercy University at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 13.
