Newport News, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team tumbled in two games on Saturday afternoon against the No. 17 Christopher Newport University Captains in the Seahawks' first Capital Athletic Conference road games of the season.
Christopher Newport (12-3, 2-1 CAC) took the first game with a score of 12-3. The Seahawks (4-10, 0-3 CAC) would see a closer game in the nightcap, falling short by one run, 3-2, to conclude the doubleheader.
The Captains would be the first to get on the board in the first game, scoring one run at the bottom of the second. The Seahawks would answer and take a 3-1 lead in the fourth. With bases loaded, the Seahawks were able to take advantage when senior Hayden Ferington (Centreville, Va./Westfield) was walked and brought home first-year Stetson Cox (Fallston, Md./Loyola Blakefield). Soon after junior Colin Thatcher (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) grounded out to the shortstop, advancing first-year Holden Marshall (Baltimore, Md./Friends) for the second Seahawk run of the game. The final run came when Ferington crossed home plate on a wild pitch.
Despite the Seahawks effort and a two-run lead in the fourth, they would not score again and the Captains responded with a five-run scoring rally in the fifth inning. CNU would again bring in three runs in the sixth. The Captains were led by senior Connor Henderson (Hampton, Va./Bethel), who acquired three runs, one hit, and one RBI, while, senior Kyle Corwin (Centreville, Va./Westfield) contributed one run, two hits, and four RBI. The Captains would achieve 12 runs and 13 hits for the game.
The Seahawks would wrap up the first game with three runs and four hits while junior LHP Ben Goldsmith (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) suffered the loss after 4.2 innings of work, dropping to 0-3 on the season. The Seahawks were led by Cox who had one run and two hits.
The second game would showcase a closer battle for the Seahawks. The Seahawks concluded the doubleheader with two runs, six hits, and three errors. Meanwhile, the Captains secured three runs on seven hits with no errors.
The Captains again took an early lead, scoring one run in the second inning and two in the third. The Captains would remain scoreless for the remaining five innings.
The Seahawks would score their first run of the game at the top of the fourth. Senior Hunter Mohler (La Plata, Md./Bishop McNamara) singled through the left side, scoring sophomore Bennett Garner (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and closing the gap to 3-1. This would be Mohler's second RBI of the day.
In the ninth, the Seahawks looked to capitalize on Ferington's two-out triple to left center, putting him in perfect position to score. Senior Michael O'Neill (Ocean City, Md./Decatur) then singled up the middle to bring home Ferington and pull the team within one. Despite the effort in the ninth, it would not be enough to top the Captains.
Senior Garrett Pope (Port Republic, Md./Calvert) took the loss for the Seahawks after pitching 5.2 innings and tallying three strikeouts, setting him at 1-2 for the season.
The Seahawks will look to improve their record at home tomorrow, Sunday, March 13 as they take on The Catholic University of America at the Hawk's Nest at 1:00 p.m.
