Arlington, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team (4-14, 0-6 CAC) dropped a close doubleheader to Marymount (Va.) University (14-9, 6-0 CAC). The first game would end with a three-run difference as the Saints claimed a 14-11 win. The day would conclude with a 7-2 setback for the Seahawks.
The Seahawks would finish the doubleheader with a total of 11 hits, including six in the first game. Senior shortstop Hunter Mohler (La Plata, Md./Bishop McNamara) would record two RBI, two runs, and one hit in game one while junior outfielder Colin Thatcher (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) would contribute two runs and one RBI.
Neither team scored until Marymount drew first blood in the bottom of the fourth. The Saints would capitalize offensively when junior catcher Roy Coates (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) homered to right field, recording three RBI. Sophomore shortstop Kaden Darrow (Burke, Va./Robinson) would follow suit and hit another homer for Marymount for a 4-0 lead.
Starting the seventh inning down four runs, the Seahawks went to work with a three-run scoring rally. Junior first baseman Anthony Cangelosi (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) would ground out to the shortstop, allowing Thatcher to find home plate. Quickly after, Mohler would reach the bag at first on an error by the third baseman and first-year outfielder Lucas Kraft (Boyds, Md./Clarksburg) scored to cut the lead to 6-4. Senior DH Michael O'Neill (Ocean City, Md./Decatur) singled to right field to drive in Mohler, pulling the team within one.
Marymount would be quick to answer with three runs in the bottom of the seventh and a five-run rally in the eighth. The Seahawks would continue the battle in the top of the ninth. St. Mary's would go on its largest scoring rally, putting up six runs on the board. Senior Connor Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) would score his second run of the game in this inning when first-year Holden Marshall (Baltimore, Md./Friends School) singled through the left side, allowing Goodie to stride home from third base for the third run of the inning. Mohler would contribute with a triple down the right field line, scoring junior Zach Rowe (Davidsonville, Md./Calvert Hall) and Marshall. Despite the Seahawks great effort, they would fall short to the Saints.
Junior pitcher Ben Goldsmith (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) would take the loss for the Seahawks as Goldsmith pitched five innings.
Rowe would pace the Seahawks in the second game by putting up two hits and one RBI. St. Mary's would score in the seventh and eighth innings to even up the score at 2-2. First-year Matt Ansaldi (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) would record the first RBI of the game when Ansaldi singled to bring home sophomore catcher Sean Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun). With two outs in the top of the eighth, the Seahawks capitalized on Rowe being walked with bases loaded, scoring first-year Stetson Cox (Fallston, Md./Loyola Blakefield).
The Saints would respond quickly at the bottom of the eighth scoring five runs to take the lead and the win. Junior infielder Brandon Savage (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) would record three RBI when he doubled, helping Marymount to victory.
Seahawk junior Jimmy Robey (Kensington, Md./Gonzaga College) would pitch 1.1 innings for the loss. Junior RHP Ben Berczek (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) would improve his record to 2-0 with two innings of relief.
The Seahawks will face No. 25 University of Mary Washington at the Hawk's Nest on Wednesday, March 23 at 3:30 p.m.
