St. Mary's Baseball Tops Mary Washington in CAC Action

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team battled successfully and received their first Capital Athletic Conference win of the season against the University of Mary Washington with a score of 6-5.

The Seahawks (5-14, 1-6 CAC) were on their hitting game today, totaling 17 hits for the game. Senior first baseman Michael O'Neill (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) and first-year outfielder Holden Marshall (Baltimore, Md./Friends School) both tallied three hits for the Seahawks. O'Neill would also contribute two RBI and two runs.

St. Mary's would be the first on the board, getting a pair of runs in the first and one run in the third. This would put the Seahawks at a three-run lead at the beginning of the fourth. Both Mary Washington (16-8, 1-6 CAC), who received votes in this week's ABCA Division III Poll, and St. Mary's would get two runs each at the end of the fourth.

Mary Washington's junior outfielder Kyle Bynum (Portsmouth, Va./Virginia Tech) paced the Eagles, finishing shy of the cycle with a double, triple, and home run under his belt. Bynum would have three runs, three hits, and two RBI for the Eagles. Despite Bynum's effort, he would not be able to salvage the game for the Eagles.

With two outs left in the top of ninth and a run away from a tie, Bynum would fly out to left field and sealed the win for St. Mary's. Today's victory snapped an eight-game skid for the Seahawks.

Junior pitcher Nick Raimondo (Davidsonville, Md./South River) captured the win for the Seahawks, pitching 6.0 innings with three strikeouts while sophomore Matt Henigan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) worked 1.1 innings for his third save of the season. The Eagles' sophomore Joe Thompson (Landenburg, Pa./West Grove) would take the loss after giving up two runs in the first inning.

The Seahawks will be back in action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 24 as they take on Rivier University at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf at 7:05 p.m.
