St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team (6-17, 2-8 CAC) conquered the York College of Pennsylvania Spartans (7-17-1, 5-5 CAC) in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday afternoon to clinch a 10-8 conference win, splitting the season series.
Senior first baseman Michael O'Neill (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) and junior Zach Rowe (Davidsonville, Md./Calvert Hall) both contributed two hits, two runs, and one RBI while senior Hayden Ferington (Centreville, Va./Westfield) tallied four RBI and a double. The Seahawks would walk away with 10 runs and 10 hits and committed just one error.
The Spartans would be first on the board, scoring three runs in the fourth inning; however, the Seahawks would quickly answer with two runs in the bottom of the inning as O'Neill and Ferington would both score. York would again score three runs in the fifth, upping its lead to 6-2.
St. Mary's was determined to keep its momentum up and it showed in the bottom of fifth. Ferington would record two RBI when he doubled to right center, scoring junior shortstop Hunter Mohler (La Plata, Md./Bishop McNamara) and Rowe. Ferington would also come in after a single from O'Neill. Senior catcher Connor Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) would double to right field, allowing O'Neill to find home plate to tie the score at 6-6. The Seahawks would score two quick runs with two outs left to secure an 8-6 lead through five innings.
The Seahawks would find the board again in the eighth inning. Ferington again would get a big hit, singling to right center to bring in Mohler and Rowe. St. Mary's entered the top of the ninth with a four-run lead over the Spartans.
York would battle and score two more runs at the top of the ninth but would not be able to upend the Seahawks. The Spartans' sophomore shortstop Collin Crowell (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) would record three hits, two runs, and one RBI. The Spartans would conclude the evening's match with eight runs on 13 hits and no errors.
The Seahawks' junior Nick Raimondo (Davidsonville, Md./South River) would pitch 6.0 innings for this third win of the season as Raimondo improved his record to 3-2 with a career-best six strikeouts and two walks.
The Seahawks will look for another conference win on Saturday as they take on Penn State Harrisburg in a CAC doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. St. Mary's will honor the 2016 senior class before the start of the first game.
