St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team fell 11-3 to the Wesley College Wolverines in their first Capital Athletic Conference contest of the season on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior SS Hunter Mohler (La Plata, Md./Bishop McNamara) paced the Seahawks with a double to left field at the bottom of the first while senior DH Hayden Ferington (Centreville, Va./Westfield) recorded his 13th hit of the season. The Seahawks would tally six hits in all for the game.
Ferington recorded an RBI when he grounded out to the shortstop allowing first-year OF Stetson Cox (Fallston, Md./Loyola Blakefield) to take the stride to home plate for the first Seahawk run. The Seahawks would score two more runs in the sixth inning. Ferington scored a run after first-year OF Holden Marshall (Baltimore, Md./Friends School) infield hit. Quickly after, junior 1B Anthony Cangelosi (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) singled to right field and brought home senior catcher Connor Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun).
St. Mary's, however, would not be able to catch up to the Wolverines. Wesley scored six runs in the first inning, setting a substantial lead early on. They would then have a three-run scoring rally in the fifth and tacked on one-run apiece in the sixth and the seventh innings.
The Wolverines were led by senior OF Ron Morello (Valley Falls, N.Y./Hoosic Valley Central) who had three runs, three hits, and four RBI. Wesley College would close out the game with 13 hits, 11 RBI, and three errors.
The Wolverines' sophomore pitcher Cody Simet (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) would receive the win on the afternoon, improving his record to 3-0, while junior Andrew Weaver (Swansee, Ill./Belleville East) would receive his first save of the season. Junior pitcher Ben Goldsmith (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) would take the loss for the Seahawks.
The Seahawks will be back in conference action on the road as they take on No. 17 Christopher Newport University in a doubleheader this Saturday, March 12. First pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.
