St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team (9-20, 4-11 CAC) put up a fight on Monday afternoon in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader with the Southern Virginia University Knights (9-20, 5-10 CAC), dropping a 6-2 decision in the first game and coming back to win 5-3 in the second game.

The Seahawks were able to record two runs on four hits with one error in game one of the doubleheader. Junior second baseman Zach Rowe (Davidsonville, Md./Calvert Hall) and sophomore outfielder Matt Bieler (Bowie, Md./Bowie) would both tally a run each for the Seahawks. Both runs would be scored in the bottom of the third, tying the game at 2-2.

The Knights, however, would be able to put up four more runs to secure the victory against the Seahawks. Southern Virginia was led by first-year second baseman Jordan Nase (Prince George, Va./Prince George) who notched two runs, three hits, and one RBI. Sophomore Tayler Peterson (Salem, Utah/Salem Hills) would take the win for the Knights.

Senior Ben Goldsmith (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) worked six innings with five strikeouts and one walk as Goldsmith suffered the loss while first-year Josh Loftus (Dinwiddie, Va./Kenston Forest) came in relief and pitched the last three innings.

St. Mary's would enter the second game ready to battle. Recording five runs on eight hits with one error, the Seahawks were able to outlast the Knights.

First year outfielder Holden Marshall (Baltimore, Md./Friends School) had a big triple to right field, bringing in senior third baseman Hayden Ferington (Centreville, Va./Westfield) and first baseman Michael O'Neill (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur). O'Neil and senior shortstop Hunter Mohler (La Plata, Md./La Plata) both contributed doubles. Mohler's double to left field would score junior Anthony Cangelosi (Olney, Md./Good Counsel), making it the first run of the game.

Senior shortstop Marcus Begg (Clearwater, Fla./Mitchell) paced Southern Virginia with one run, two hits, and one RBI. The Knights would be able to capture three runs on six hits with one error.

Senior Garrett Pope (Port Republic, Md./Calvert) would work seven innings and improve his record to 2-4 as Pope fanned three batters. Sophomore Matt Henigan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) worked the eighth inning before junior Nick Raimondo (Davidsonville, Md./South River) collected his second save of the season, pitching a hitless and scoreless ninth inning.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Wednesday, April 13 on the road as they take on Wesley College in conference action at 3:30 p.m.
