St. Mary's Men's Soccer Clips Catholic in Overtime

Washington, D.C. – For the second straight game, sophomore midfielder Juwan Kearson (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) netted the game-winning goal, propelling the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime road win over The Catholic University of America Wednesday afternoon.

St. Mary's (Md.) 1, Catholic 0 (OT)

How It Happened

  • The contest was pretty evenly matched during regulation as shots were even at 16 apiece. Corner kicks were also equal at four for each side.
  • Junior captain Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) had a strong second half, making five stops on nine shots and four corner kicks to preserve the clean sheet and force an extra frame.
  • Kearson came through with his second game-winner of the season with 3:13 remaining in the first overtime period. He beat two defenders and tossed it around in the box before hitting the upper right corner.

For the Seahawks (5-0-1)

  • Scorer: Kearson (1 goal).
  • Goalkeeper: Haussler (season-best 8 saves, 0 goals allowed, 101:47).
  • St. Mary's finished the game with 16 shots and four corner kicks.

For Catholic (2-4-0)

  • Scorers: None.
  • Goalkeeper: Zachery Tashjy (6 saves, 1 goal allowed, 101:47).
  • The Cardinals put up 16 shots and five corner kicks.

Notes

  • Today's victory over Catholic is the first time since 2005 that St. Mary's has posted a win over the Cardinals, putting an end to CUA's nine-game unbeaten streak over the Seahawks.
  • St. Mary's entered today's action ranked fifth in the South Atlantic region, marking the first time since 2011 that the Seahawks have regionally ranked.
  • The 5-0-1 record is the best start St. Mary's has had in the first six games since opening up the 2003 campaign with a 5-1-0 mark.
