St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team played two games in Virginia over the weekend, facing Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponents, Bridgewater (Va.) College and Washington and Lee University. St. Mary's dropped a pair of tough battles, falling 2-1 in double overtime to Bridgewater on Saturday and then suffering a 3-2 setback at Washington and Lee on Sunday.
Bridgewater (Va.) 2, St. Mary's (Md.) 1 (2OT)
How It Happened
- The only goal of the first half was an own goal in the 16th minute, giving the Seahawks a 1-0 lead.
- In the 71st minute, Bridgewater would tie the game when first-year forward Isabella Weigel (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area)would findthe net off an assist from sophomore midfielder Isabella Krider (Arlington, Va./Yorktown).
- The Seahawks had a good opportunity in the first OT session when a shot by senior captain Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) sailed high right above the crossbar.
- Weigel would capitalize on a penalty kick in the second OT to secure the game for the Eagles.
- Sawyer concluded the game with seven shots.
For St. Mary's (3-3-0)
- Scorer: Team (1 goal).
- Goalkeeper: Junior Sydney Larkin (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) would play 104:11 minutes and walked away with season-best six saves and two goals allowed.
- The Seahawks had 19 shots and three corner kicks.
For Bridgewater (6-1-0)
- Scorers: Weigel (2 goals).
- Goalkeeper: Junior Haley Talbott (Fairfax, Va./Robinson Secondary) would play 104:11 minutes and make six saves in the contest.
- The Eagles would capture 23 shots and conclude the game with six corner kicks.
Washington and Lee 3, St. Mary's (Md.) 2
How It Happened
- The Seahawks had the first goal of the game and the only one of the first half.
- Senior forward Ellen Airozo (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein) would find the net at 43:13 to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead at halftime.
- In the 64th minute, the Generals would tie the game when sophomore forward Caroline Peters (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) took advantage of a cross in the box and scored.
- St. Mary's would quickly take the lead again when senior captain Claire Kostelnik (Los Angeles, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart) received the ball from junior defender Nora Howard (Takoma Park, Md./Edmund Burke) to make the score 2-1 at 79:56.
- The Generals would score two more times in the second half to secure the win against the Seahawks.
- Junior Caroline Hahn (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) would score the game-winning goal for the Generals in the 88th minute of the game.
For St. Mary's (3-4)
- Scorers: Airozo (1 goal); Kostelnik (1 goal); Howard (1 assist).
- Goalkeepers: Sophomore Katie Flores (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) would play 45:00 minutes and walked away with four saves and no goals allowed while Larkin would play the entire second half with one save three goals allowed.
- The Seahawks would take five shots and four corner kicks.
For Washington and Lee (4-2)
- Scorers: Peters (2 goals); Hahn (1 goal, 1 assist); Kelsey Chamberlin (1 assist); Katie Pettit (1 assist).
- Goalkeeper: Maggie Nolan (Fairfax, Va./Robinson Secondary) would play 90 minutes with one save and two goals allowed.
- The Generals would take 13 shots and conclude the game with five corner kicks.
Notes
- Sawyer now ranks third all-time with 87 (39g, 9a) career points and only needs seven points to break the record of 93 (36g, 21a) set by Christa Childers '02.
