St. Mary's Baseball Splits Doubleheader with McDaniel

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team split a twin bill with the McDaniel College Green Terror, winning the opening game on Sunday afternoon.

Game 1
How It Happened

  • First-year RHP Zach Thompson (West River, Md./Spalding) would lead the Seahawks as Thompson pitched a complete game victory with a season-best seven strikeouts.
  • The Seahawks would take a 1-0 lead in the third inning when first-year first baseman Jay Hammett (Coltons Point, Md./Chopticon) singled to left field to bring in sophomore centerfielder Lucas Kraft (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) for the first run of the day. Kraft came home from second after a one-out single to left and stealing second.
  • The Seahawks would then take a 4-0 lead in the game with a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth.
  • First-year right fielder Timmy Prenger (Phoenix, Md./Calvert Hall) would score on a McDaniel error, leaving Kraft on second and senior shortstop Zach Rowe (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) on first.
  • Hammett would slug another single to drive in Kraft for the third run of the game before Rowe would then advance to home plate after a hard hit to left field by junior catcher Sean Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun).
  • The Green Terror would score their lone run in the sixth inning when junior shortstop Antonio Rosanova (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) capitalized on senior second baseman Tyler O'Shea's (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) single to center field, finding home plate from second base.
  • The Seahawks would conclude the first game with four runs on five hits and one error while McDaniel would tally one run on four hits and one error.

Game 2
How It Happened

  • St. Mary's would fall to McDaniel in the second contest of the day, coming up short with a score of 13-1.
  • McDaniel would start off the game by racking up five runs in the top of the first inning.
  • The Seahawks would respond with two runs in the first as Kraft scored on Hammett's double to leftfield after Kraft lead off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice hit, and stole third. Redshirt junior catcher Matt Bieler (Bowie, Md./Bowie) came home on a loaded bases sacrifice fly.
  • St. Mary's would close the gap to 5-3 in the second inning when junior infielder Dan McCann (Laurel, Md./Atholton) scored on Rowe's loaded bases sacrifice fly.
  • The Green Terror would then have back-to-back four-run innings in the third and fourth to capture the second game of the night.
  • First-year first baseman Evan Finch (Laurel, Md./St. John's College) led McDaniel with three hits, including a double, three RBI, and two runs scored.
  • Hammett would take away his second double of the season with one run scored and one RBI to pace St. Mary's.
  • The Seahawks would earn three runs on five hits and two errors.
  • Sophomore RHP Mark Smith (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) would receive the loss for the Seahawks, dropping his record to 0-2 for the season. Smith would pitch 2.0 innings, giving up nine runs (five earned) on six hits with two walks.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, March 4, against Hood College at 12:00 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader at the Hawk's Nest.
