How It Happened

  • The Seahawks would start with an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Senior catcher Matt Bieler (Bowie, Md./Bowie) would hit a sacrifice fly to score senior second baseman Zach Rowe (Davidsonville, Md./Calvert Hall). Sophomore designated hitter Bennett Garner (Bowie, Md./Bowie) would follow suit with a single to centerfield to drive in sophomore shortstop Brandon Snow (Owings, Md./Northern).
  • The Spartans would respond with two runs of their own in the first inning as well.
  • St. Mary's would then take a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth. First-year first baseman Jay Hammett (Coltons Point, Md./Chopticon) would slug a single to bring Snow home. The Seahawks would take advantage of a Spartan error, allowing Hammett to find the plate for St. Mary's final run.
  • In the ninth inning, the Spartans would tie up the score as Collin Crowell would single up the middle to score Grant Oberholtzer and cut the deficit in half. Zach Hossler would then hit a sac fly to right field to bring in Patrick Clement for the game-tying run.
  • York would finish off the game in the bottom of the 10th as Oberholtzer struck the ball to left field, driving in Michael Moore for the game-winning run with one out and two runners left on base.
