St. Mary's Baseball Splits Final CAC Doubleheader of 2017

Buena Vista, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team beat Southern Virginia University in the second game of the Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon after falling in the opening contest.

How It Happened

  • First-year first baseman Jay Hammett (Coltons Point, Md./Chopticon) and senior catcher Matt Bieler (Bowie, Md./Bowie) would each contribute a home run. Hammett would homer to left centerfield in the top of the third to bring in senior second baseman Zach Rowe (Davidsonville, Md./Calvert Hall) and junior third baseman Dan McCann (Laurel, Md./Atholton).
  • Bieler slammed the ball out of the park in the ninth inning, scoring sophomore shortstop Brandon Snow (Owings, Md./Northern) and Hammett.
  • Hammett and Bieler would also each add a double along with first-year pinch hitter Dakota Merritt (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills). Sophomore centerfielder Lucas Kraft (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) walked away with a pair of doubles.
  • The Knights would earn the first lead with four runs in the first inning. The Seahawks quickly caught up and ended the seventh inning tied 4-4.
  • Southern Virginia would have their biggest scoring rally in the bottom of the seventh, earning six runs.
  • Entering the ninth, the Seahawks would find themselves down, 13-5, but would go on a six-run scoring rally in the ninth to pull within two with two outs on the board. Southern Virginia shut down the rally as St. Mary's left one on.

For St. Mary's (8-20, 2-15 CAC)

  • Hitting: Hammett (2-for-4, 4 RBI, 2 runs, double, home run), Bieler (3-for4, 3 RBI, run, double, home run), Kraft (3-for-5, 3 RBI, 2 doubles, run)
  • Pitching: Ben Goldsmith (No decision, 5.1 IP, 2 strikeouts, 1 walk, 9 hits, 4 runs); Mark Smith (L, 1-5) (0.2 IP, 1 strikeout, 2 walks, 2 hits, 3 runs); Tim Hand (2.0 IP, 1 strikeout, 1 walk, 4 hits, 6 runs (4 earned))

For Southern Virginia (12-26, 4-13 CAC)

  • Hitting: Jordan Keefers (3-for5, 6 RBI, 2 runs, 2 home runs); Cole Critchfield (3-for-4, RBI, double), Riley Daniels (3-for-5, 2 runs, RBI, home run)

How It Happened

  • Hammett led the Seahawks in the nightcap, earning his second home run of the day as well as his second double. He would score two runs and drive in four runs, including the first run of the game to lead 1-0. He would also cap the seventh inning, where the Seahawks went on an eight-run rally, slamming one of the park and bringing home Rowe.
  • The Seahawks went scoreless for the second and third innings while the Knights tallied five runs, entering the fourth with a 5-1 lead on St. Mary's.
  • In the fourth inning, the Seahawks would score four runs as Merritt advanced Snow and Hammett to home plate. Kraft would capitalize on a Knights error and found home to tie up the game, at 5-5.
  • St. Mary's would have their largest scoring run in the seventh inning, leading the Knights, 16-7.
  • Southern Virginia would answer in the eighth inning with four runs but it would not be enough to top the Seahawks.

For St. Mary's (9-20, 3-15 CAC)
