St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team came up short in their home- and season-opener Wednesday afternoon. St. Mary's dropped a 5-3 decision to The Catholic University of America in non-conference action at the Hawk's Nest.

How It Happened
- Catholic opened up the scoring early with three runs in the top of the first inning. Bailey Lewis drove in one run with a double before a scoring a run himself on a two-run single by Connor Sullivan with two outs.
- The Seahawks responded in the bottom of the third with a pair to pull within one. Junior right fielder Dakota Merritt (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) notched a lead-off walk and then came home on an RBI double by junior leftfielder Holden Marshall (Towson, Md./Friends School). Marshall then crossed home plate on a ground out to the shortstop by junior centerfielder Lucas Kraft (Boyds, Md./Clarksburg). David Gately struck out the last batter to end the inning and stop St. Mary's run.
- Five scoreless innings would follow before Catholic picked up two more runs in the ninth to stake a three-run lead. The Cardinals scored both runs on a pair of wild pitches.
- St. Mary's got one back in its half of the ninth as first-year Nick Manzoni (Towson, Md./Dulaney) came in as a pinch hitter and knocked in first-year Joey Bryner (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) with a two-out single. Ross Dean struck out the last batter to seal the win as the Seahawks left two on base to end the game.
