Seahawks Score 29 Runs in Dominant Victory over Wesley

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball (5-3-1) scored 29 runs in a dominant 29-0 victory over the visiting Wesley College Wolverines (0-5-1) on Thursday (Mar. 7) afternoon. The Seahawks 29 runs were the most scored since St. Mary's College defeated Gallaudet 29-8 back on Apr. 12, 2008.

How It Happened

  • The Seahawks scored in all stages of the game, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jay Hammett and Tyson Johnson drove home runs for the early advantage. In the second inning, St. Mary's College tacked on six more runs for an 8-0 lead. Dakota Merritt, Hammett, Bowen Plagge, Johnson, and Connor Coursey recorded RBI's during the six run stretch.

  • St. Mary's College failed to drive in any runs in inning three and four, but exploded in the fifth inning with 14 runs. The inning was highlighted by a three-run home run from Hammett, which gave the Seahawks a 13-0 lead at the time. Wesley replaced their pitcher after the Hammett home run. Next, Plagge stepped up to the plate and blasted a solo shot off the relief pitcher's second pitch of his appearance.

  • Leading 22-0, the Seahawks added seven more runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Nick Manzoni, Hammett, Dan McCann, Andrew Atkins, and Sam James tallied RBI's during the seven run stretch.

Inside the Box Score

  • Hammett led the Seahawks on the offensive end, finishing two-of-four from the plate with seven RBI, four runs, and one walk. Plagge added offensive production with three hits, four RBI, and two runs. Manzoni came in late in the game and finished three-of-three from the plate and tallied three RBI.

  • Connor Manion earned the victory on the mound, pitching five scoreless innings and struck out three batters. Jonathan Everidge, Eric Jones, Jake Wills, and Kelli Jenkins all pitched one inning in relief and kept the Wolverine scoreless.
