Box Score

St. Mary's City, MD-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team (0-1) welcomed the Catholic University Cardinals (3-0) to begin their 2023 campaign. The 20th ranked Cardinals were able to come out on top, 11-5.

How It Happened

  • The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the first inning. St. Mary's was able to score their first run of the season shortly thereafter when Dan Weeden connected on an RBI double to send Chase Odell home from first base. The Seahawks knotted things up at two a piece in the second inning after Garrett Pullium doubled to deep right center to allow Ian Walters to score.

  • The Cardinals were able to capitalize on some miscues over the middle innings to take a 9-2 advantage, but the Seahawks wouldn't go away. Chase Odell got St. Mary's closer by driving in Derrick Booker from first base to trim the lead to six after an RBI single. In the eighth inning, Brian Sanders came through with the momentum shifting play the Seahawks needed. Sanders drove a ball to center field that sent two runners to home play to make it just a four run ball game.

  • Unfortunately for the Seahawks, the rally would come up short and the Cardinals would score two more in the ninth inning to take the game by a final of 11-5.
