Harris Selected as United East Women’s Tennis Senior Scholar-Athlete

LATHAM, N.Y. – Giselle Harris '25 (Easton, Md./Easton) earned the United East Conference Senior Scholar-Athlete Award for Women's Tennis as announced by the league office Thursday morning (June 5). This award recognizes a senior who truly represents the student-athlete model by performing in competition, in the classroom and around the community.
 
"Giselle has been a team captain for three years and has always set the example for our team of what an accomplished student-athlete should be. She leads by example in the classroom, on the court, and everywhere else. I am beyond proud of her for earning this honor and know her positivity, kindness, and leadership will have a lasting impact on the team," third-year Head Coach Sona Brymer said.
 
Criteria for the award is as follows:
  1. A student-athlete must have a senior or graduate student class standing.
  2. A student-athlete must be at least in his or her second year of competition at their current institution in any sport.
  3. Must be a leading contributor to a team's success throughout the duration of his or her career.
  4. Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  5. Evidence of active leadership and community service involvement throughout collegiate career.
 
The United East Senior Scholar-Athlete Award is in its third year of existence and St. Mary's College has had 12 Seahawks earn the honor during that time.
 
A three-year team captain, Harris graduated with a 3.987 cumulative GPA as a psychology and Spanish double major and an economics major. She is the second SMCM women's tennis player to pick up the United East Senior Scholar-Athlete Award as Hannah Gorel '23 was the first in 2023.
 
Harris made the Dean's List every semester, which awards those students who earn a minimum semester grade-point average of 3.50 or better on all courses attempted with at least 12 credit hours taken for a letter grade. She is also a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, the national collegiate student-athlete honor society for juniors and seniors, and Phi Beta Kappa.
 
She is a two-time United East Scholar-Athlete (2022 and 2023) while landing on the United East Winter/Spring All-Academic Team in her last two seasons. Harris also racked up three straight Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete awards while landing on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team as a sophomore and junior.
 
On the court, Harris wrapped up her Seahawk career as an eight-time All-United East selection. She collected three First Team awards in singles and two First Team honors in doubles. Additionally, Harris notched a Second Team accolade in singles and two Second Team laurels in doubles.
 
She tallied 41 wins in doubles action as well as 32 singles victories, helping St. Mary's College win the United East regular-season title in 2022, 2023, and 2025 as well as the tournament championship title in 2022 and 20223.
 
Gorel served the community as well, using her Spanish to help a family in which English was a second language.
