Arlington, Va. - Junior
midfielder Sophia Esparza (Silver Spring,
Md./Montgomery Blair) buried a penalty kick with 38 seconds
remaining in the second overtime period to keep the St. Mary's
College of Maryland women's soccer team unbeaten in Capital
Athletic Conference action as the Seahawks notched a 3-2 double OT
victory over a scrappy Marymount (Va.) University squad Tuesday
night.
Esparza finished the night with the
game-winning goal and a pair of assists as St. Mary's (9-1-3, 6-0-1
CAC) maintained its hold on the No. 1 spot in the conference
standings.
Marymount (2-12-1, 0-7 CAC), who remains winless in league play,
was 1:01 from pulling the upset before senior midfielder
Abby Bishop (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) netted just
second career goal at 88:59 off an assist by
Esparza, knotting the game at 2-2 in regulation.
Senior midfielder Katrina Borden (Hartfield,
Va./Wakefield) notched her third goal of the season at 19:46 to
give the Seahawks an early 1-0 lead as Borden took
a feed from Esparza.
However, back-to-back unassisted goals from junior Dana
Zalowski (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) in the second
half put the Saints ahead 2-1 with 17:49 left in regulation.
Ranked fourth in the NSCAA Middle Atlantic Region, St. Mary's
outshot the Saints, 23-17, including 7-1 in overtime. The
Seahawks also held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
Senior keeper Marie Oben (Glenn Dale, Md./St.
Mary's, Annapolis) matched her career-high with 11 saves in 109:22
minutes of action.
Senior Carrie Schneider (Derwood, Md./Magruder)
and junior Sara Horne (Severna Park, Md./Mount de
Sales) combined for 10 stops in the loss.
St. Mary's has a tough match-up coming up this Saturday, October
25 when the Seahawks make the trek to Salisbury, Md. to take on
Salisbury University, who is also unbeaten in CAC play with a 5-0-2
conference record. The game is slated to start at 1:00.
Saturday's outcome will help determine the seeding for the upcoming
CAC Tournament which begins November 1.
