Harrisonburg, Va. - Senior
Alyssa Derstine's (Telford, Pa.) second goal of
the afternoon proved to key as Derstine lifted
Eastern Mennonite University to a 4-3 double overtime win over the
St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team in the Seahawks'
regular-season finale on Tuesday.
Derstine notched the sudden victory goal 4:21
into the start of the second overtime period to give the Royals
their ninth win of the season. Junior Hailee
Rittle (Jonestown, Pa.) assisted on the play.
St. Mary's freshman forward Lauriann Parker
(Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) set the school single-season record for
points with her one-goal effort today.
Parker now leads the Seahawks (8-7) with 31 points
on 13 goals and five assists. Her 31 points breaks the
previous mark of 29 set by Marianne Wood '08 in
2006. Parker's 13 goals also match the
school's single-season record for goals set by
Wood in 2005.
On the other side of the ball, senior defender Julia
Puzak (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) notched two defensives saves
to tie the all-time record for defensive saves with 15 during her
four-year career, matching the career effort of Mia Oliver
'04. This season, Puzak paces the
Seahawks with nine defensive saves.
EMU (9-7) jumped on the visitors early as
Derstine struck with her first tally of the day at
3:10. However, St. Mary's responded in 1:34 as freshman
midfielder Brooke Masimore's (Hampstead, Md./North
Carroll) goal deflected off a Royal defender to even the contest at
1-all.
The Royals regained the lead at 23:32 as junior forward
Linda Cimini (Cape May, N.J.) converted a feed
from senior midfielder Sarah Roth (Lancaster,
Pa.). Once again, the lead for EMU was short-lived as
freshman forward Ali McIntosh (Stevensville,
Md./Kent Island) found the back of the cage just over two minutes
later off an assist by Masimore, knotting the game
at 2-2.
The Seahawks claimed their first lead of the contest at 50:04
when Parker picked up her team-leading 13th
goal. Again, the lead did not last long as
Cimini beat junior goalkeeper Emma
Lauhoff (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) for her second tally of the
day at 55:55.
EMU was relentless in the first overtime period, rattling off
six shots to the Seahawks' two, but Lauhoff was up
to the task and denied three shots. St. Mary's was awarded a
penalty corner at 76:25 but the resultant shot was saved by junior
Becky Nolt (East Berlin, Pa.).
St. Mary's had an opportunity to win it at 86:55 but
Parker's shot hit the post. The Royals'
three shots in the second OT were blocked, wide, and hit the post
before Derstine broke through for the game-winner
at 89:21.
EMU notched 27 shots to the Seahawks' 12, while the Royals
posted a 9-5 margin in corners.
Nolt finished with five stops while
Lauhoff had six for St. Mary's.
The Seahawks will await the announcement of the Capital Athletic
Conference tournament pairings to see who they'll face in the first
round on Sunday, November 1.
