Annapolis, Md. - The Franklin
& Marshall College men's lacrosse team used a 4-1 run in the
third quarter to break a 4-4 halftime draw en route to a 10-7
victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland in the conference
opener for both squads Wednesday afternoon. The game was
played at Lawrence E. Knight Stadium on the Broadneck High School
campus.
The Diplomats (1-0) struck first as attackmen Mark
Hild (Denver, Colo.) and Kevin Kilpatrick
(West Chester, Pa.) combined for the game's first two goals.
However, St. Mary's responded with two of its own as sophomores
Chris Becraft (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) and
Bobby Cooke (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) found
the back of the net to knot the game at 2-all at the end of the
first period.
In the second stanza, sophomore attackman Dennis
Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn) gave the Seahawks (0-1)
a 3-2 edge at 12:37. F&M answered with back-to-back as
junior midfielder Shane Brennan (West Chester,
Pa.) notched a man-up goal at 11:05 and senior Noah
Wilkinsky (Ardmore, Pa.) picked up his first of the day at
7:14. Sophomore attackman Sam Burns
(Potomac, Md./T.S. Wootton) tied the game at 4-4 with 30 seconds
remaining in the first half with a man-up goal.
Wilkinsky paced the Diplomats with two goals
and an assist, while Brennan finished with two
goals and freshman attackman Colin McKew (Glen
Arm, Md.) dished out two assists.
F&M scored the first two goals in the third frame to post a
6-4 advantage at 13:47. Becraft cut the
deficit to 6-5 at 12:56 with his second goal of the day off an
assist from Rosson. The Diplomats netted two
more to an 8-5 margin into the final period.
In the fourth, the two teams alternated goals with F&M
notching the first of the period for the 10-7 final.
Becraft led all scorers with five points on
four goals and an assist, while Rosson had a goal
and an assist and junior captain Ryan Alexander
(Laurel, Md./Pallotti) had two helpers.
F&M's junior Sean Murphy (Towson, Md.) won
10-of-17 face-offs and scooped up a game-high eight ground
balls. The Diplomats outshot St. Mary's, 28-23, while winning
29 of 52 ground balls.
Junior Chris Marcozzi (Springfield, Pa.) turned
away 15 shots in the Diplomat win, while sophomore Pat
Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) recorded 12 saves in the
loss.
St. Mary's will return to action this Saturday, February 28 when
the Seahawks face Dickinson College in non-conference action at
1:00 at the Bullis School in Potomac, Md.
