St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior
attackman Dennis Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn)
notched a career day with seven goals and nine points as the St.
Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team posted
their second consecutive victory with a dominating 17-6 triumph
over The College of Wooster in non-conference action Wednesday
afternoon.
Attackmen Chris Becraft (Rockville, Md./Good
Counsel) and Patrick Mull (Fallston, Md./Fallston)
had a solid afternoon for the Seahawks (2-2) as well as the duo
each tallied two goals and two assists while sophomore attackman
Brendan Oster (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) dished out
three assists.
The first period was 'The Rosson
Show' as he carried St. Mary's to a 6-0 lead at the end
of 15 minutes with four goals while midfielders Bobby
Cooke (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) and Ryan
Alexander (Laurel, Md./Pallotti) scored the other two
goals.
Wooster (2-1) outscored the home team, 3-2, in the second
quarter as junior midfielder Joe Suliman
(Sherborn, Mass.) picked up back-to-back goals to start the second
period. The Seahawks headed into halftime with an 8-3 margin.
Sophomore attackman Casey McGann (Granger,
Ind.) paced the Fighting Scots with two goals and an assist while
Suliman and senior attackman Dan
MacVarish (Hingham, Mass.) each added two goals. The
team's leading scorer, senior attackman Alex
Mies (Birmingham, Mich.), had a pair of helpers.
Rosson reemerged in the third stanza for the
last three of his goals as the Seahawks netted the first seven
goals of the period. Wooster avoided the shutout in the third
as MacVarish beat junior goalie Stu
Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) with 24 seconds
left.
The teams were even in the final quarter as
Alexander and attackman J.P.
Lennon (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) notched the
first two for the Seahawks and then MacVarish and
McGann scored the final two.
St. Mary's dominated the ground ball battle, outhustling
the Fighting Scots, 32 to 19, as first-year midfielder
Albert Mitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint
John's) scooped up a game-high 12 ground balls while
controlling the face-offs with a 16-of-23 performance.
Junior goalie Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St.
Paul's) started in goal for SMCM, making nine saves and
allowing four goals in the first three periods before junior
Pat Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) came in the
fourth period, giving up two goals and turning away three shots.
Sophomore Corey McGann (Granger, Ind.) recorded
seven saves in 55:57 while freshman Simon
Ebbott-Burg (Brookline, Mass.) had one stop and one goal
against in 4:03 of relief as McGann was in the
penalty box for unsportsmanlike conduct.
For their next game, the Seahawks will host SUNY Plattsburgh on
Sunday, March 14 at 1:00 pm in non-conference action in Seahawk
Stadium.
