Junior midfielder Chris Morihlatko (Arnold,
Md./Broadneck) rattled off a career-high four goals in leading the
St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team to a
convincing 17-4 victory over SUNY Plattsburgh on a wet, cold Monday
afternoon at the Michael H. Davis Field at Meadowood Regional Park.
Morihlatko finished the afternoon with five
points while senior midfielder Ryan Alexander
(Laurel, Md./Pallotti) and junior attackman Dennis
Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn) each added four points
as Rosson notched a hat trick and
Alexander scored twice and dished out two helpers.
St. Mary's opened up with a 2-0 margin before
Plattsburgh's first-year Tommy Kilderry
(Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) put the Cardinals on the board at
3:08 and the Seahawks headed into the second period with a 2-1
advantage.
Red-shirt junior attackman Kyle Norchi
(Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) knotted the game at 2-2 at 10:49 before
Morihlatko and Rosson helped the
Seahawks double-up on Plattsburgh with 7:55 left in the first
half. First-year Joe Kramer (Lindenhurst,
N.Y./Lindenhurst) netted the Cardinals' last goal before St.
Mary's rolled off eight unanswered goals – three to end
the second quarter and five to start the second half.
Senior midfielder Luke Flegar (Putnam Valley,
N.Y./Putnam Valley) notched the Cardinals' final goal of the
contest and of the third period as St. Mary's carried a 12-4
bulge in the final stanza.
The Seahawks clamped down on the Plattsburgh offense and held
them to only five shots, three of which were turned away by junior
goalie Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St.
Paul's). St. Mary's got it done in the offensive
end with five unanswered goals by five different scorers.
First-year midfielder Albert Mitchell
(Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) won 16-of-23 face-offs while
scooping up a game-high 11 ground balls and adding one goal.
Behind Mitchell's efforts, the Seahawks
captured the ground ball battle, 48 to 40. St. Mary's
outshot the Cardinals as well, 41 to 29.
Wheeler finished with 12 saves and four ground
balls in picking up his second win of the season.
Junior goalie Logan Carpenter (Fort Edward,
N.Y./South Glens Falls) made seven stops with seven ground balls
while giving up 13 goals in 49:46. Sophomore Danny
Caufield (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid-Jesuit) finished out the
game with three saves and three ground balls.
The Seahawks return to action next this St. Patrick's Day
as St. Mary's takes on No. 7 Denison University at 12:00 pm
at The Severn School in Severna Park, Md.
