Lancaster, Pa. - Attackmen Dennis
Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn) and Patrick
Mull (Fallston, Md./Fallston) each tallied three points in
leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team to
its first victory of the 2010 season with a 9-6 victory over
Franklin & Marshall College Saturday.
Rosson and Mull notched two
goals and an assist apiece while attackmen Chris
Becraft (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) and JP
Lennon (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) also netted two
goals for the Seahawks (1-2).
It was a low scoring first period as freshman Scott
Kenny (Gladstone, N.J.) found the back of the net first
for F& M (0-2) at 10:15 before sophomore attackman
Brendan Oster (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) evened up
the score at 1-all at 4:56.
Both teams clamped down in the defensive end for the second
quarter as neither attacking unit could find an opening to score
until the final 1:44 when the Diplomats struck twice to carry a 3-1
lead into halftime. Sophomore Colin McKew
(Glen Arm, Md./Loyola Blakefield) contributed to both goals,
scoring an unassisted goal at 1:44 and dishing out an assist to
senior Sean Oliver (Wilton, Conn.) at 00:20.
Oliver and McKew paced
Franklin & Marshall in scoring as Oliver
finished with two goals and McKew ended with one
goal and one assist from the second period.
St. Mary's continued its defensive stance in the third stanza as
the Seahawks denied any scoring opportunity to the home team.
At the other end of the field, Rosson,
Mull and Becraft all found the
back of the net to give the visitors their first lead of the game -
a 4-3 advantage after three periods.
The Seahawks netted five of the first six goals in the final
period, including two from Lennon, to boast their
biggest lead of the game - a 9-4 margin with 8:12 left in the
game. Oliver and sophomore Kevin
Kilpatrick (West Chester, Pa.) pulled F&M within 9-6
at 5:22 but that would be the closest they'd come, committing three
turnovers and having junior Pat Simpson (Arnold,
Md./Broadneck) turn away their only scoring attempt.
St. Mary's first-year midfielder Albert
Mitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) controlled the
face-offs with an 11-of-20 effort while registering a game-high
five ground balls. Sophomore LSM Peter
Windsor (Towson, Md./St. Paul's) also had five ground
balls as the Seahawks nabbed a 28-27 edge in ground balls.
Junior goalie Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St.
Paul's) started in goal for SMCM, making 10 saves and allowing
three goals in 38:19 before Simpson came in to
claim the win with five saves while giving up three goals.
Senior Chris Marcozzi (Springfield, Pa.)
recorded 12 saves and a team-best four ground balls in the loss.
The Seahawks will host The College of Wooster for their
home-opener this Wednesday, March 10 at 3:00 pm in Seahawk Stadium.
