Washington, D.C. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team picked up their second win of the season with an 8-1 non-conference victory at Trinity (D.C.) University Friday afternoon.
Junior Sarah Minkoff (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) and sophomore Marie Rau (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) opened up action for the Seahawks (2-5) with an 8-1 win over sophomores Rebecca Auleus (Hamilton, N.J.) and Sheila Jean-Baptiste (Randolph, Mass.) at No. 1 doubles.
The tandem of junior Kathleen Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and first-year Alyssa Stine (Columbia, Md./Atholton) recorded an 8-1 victory over senior Cynthia Reyes (Bronx, N.Y.) and sophomore Lakia Meriwether (Washington, D.C.) at No. 2 doubles to stretch the lead to 2-0.
St. Mary's headed into singles action with a 3-0 margin following first-years Pooja Taneja (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) and Allison Griffin (Dayton, Md./River Hill) 8-4 triumph at third doubles.
Minkoff then captured third singles by shutting out Jean-Baptiste before Stine followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Reyes at No. 4 singles.
Rau made it a 6-0 Seahawk lead with her shutout victory over Meriwether at No. 2 singles while Ramsey recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles and Taneja notched a 6-1, 6-2 win at the fifth flight to extend the lead to 8-0.
Trinity (0-1) avoided the match shutout as senior Paola Flores (Hyattsville, Md.) battled Griffin to a 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 win at the sixth and final singles flight.
St. Mary's will hope to continue its winning ways tomorrow when the Seahawks travel to Richmond, Virginia to take on Division II Virginia Union University in non-conference action at 2:00 pm.
