St. Mary's Women's Tennis Downs Stevenson, Falls to No. 24 Mary Washington

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team split its Capital Athletic Conference matches on Sunday as the Seahawks (13-6, 5-2 CAC) dominated Stevenson University, 8-1, before being shutout 9-0 by No. 24 University of Mary Washington.

With their win over Stevenson (5-7, 2-5 CAC), St. Mary's locked down the No. 3 seed in the 2012 CAC Women's Tennis Championship Tournament and will host a first round match on Saturday, April 21.

The Seahawks also set the single-season record for wins with 13, surpassing the old mark of 12 set by the 2009 squad.

In the match against Stevenson, sophomore Alyssa Stine (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and first-year Lauren Rost (Darnestown, Md./Poolesville) teamed up for an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles to extend their win streak to three straight and help St. Mary's to a 2-1 lead after doubles play.

Stine continued her winning ways in singles action as she posted a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over sophomore Jordan Rupard (North Beach, Md./Southern) at No. 3 singles to stretch the Seahawk lead to 6-1.

Senior Kathleen Ramsey (Owings, Md./Northern) notched her 10th win of the season with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 triumph at No. 4 singles over first-year Svetlana Widell (St. Michael's, Md./St. Michael's).

Rost also tallied her 10th victory of the season as she blanked senior Michelle Huber (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore), 6-0, 6-0 at the fifth singles flight.

The Seahawks now feature four players with double-digit singles wins as first-year player Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) leads the pack with 17 followed by Stine's 14 and Ramsey and Rost with 10 each.

St. Mary's wrapped up a long weekend with a tough 9-0 loss to No. 24 Mary Washington (13-5, 7-0 CAC) late Sunday afternoon.  Stumpfig and her partner, Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown), gave Mary Washington's sophomore duo of Maddy Martin and Manda Martin (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Prep) a run for their money, falling 8-6 to the Eagles at No. 3 doubles.

St. Mary's will be back in action on Monday, April 16 as the Seahawks travel to Washington, D.C. to face host Trinity Washington University in non-conference action at 3:30 pm.
