Salisbury, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team was unable to bounce back after giving up an early goal to No. 8 Salisbury University in a 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference loss Wednesday night.
Salisbury (11-3, 4-1 CAC) scored early in the contest with an unassisted goal from first-year forward Yumi Kim (Odenton, Md.) at 2:48 for her eighth of the season. St. Mary's (8-5, 1-3 CAC) held the nationally-ranked Sea Gulls to just one goal during the first half because of the play of junior goalkeeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) who registered eight saves in the first 35 minutes on 18 shots faced.
The Sea Gulls scored twice in the second stanza as Kim and sophomore forward Samantha Johnson (Delmar, Md.) had a hand in both goals. Kim finished the day with two goals on six shots while Johnson had a goal and an assist. As a team, Salisbury posted a 26-3 shot advantage and 15-2 margin in penalty corners.
Bishop ended the game with 10 saves while junior Rachel Clewer (Elkton, Md.) collected her fourth shutout of the season with one stop.
The Seahawks have two regular-season games remaining and are currently sitting in a three-way tie for fourth in the CAC with Wesley College and York College of Pennsylvania – St. Mary's last two games of the regular-season. The team will look to solidify their playoff spot as they close out regular-season play at home with Wesley (Oct. 26) and on the road against York (Oct. 29).
St. Mary's field hockey will return to action on Saturday, October 26 as they host Wesley at 1:00 pm for Senior Day in Seahawk Stadium. Prior to the start of Saturday's contest, the team's two seniors will be honored.
