Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior midfielder Lexy McCarty (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) propels the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team to a 2-1 double overtime win over Capital Athletic Conference newcomer, Christopher Newport University, Tuesday afternoon.
McCarty buried senior midfielder Yvonne Latour's (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) cross from the right side into the lower left corner with 3:13 remaining in the second extra period. The win snaps Christopher Newport's eight-game win streak and gives the Captains, who are ranked seventh in the South Atlantic Region, their first loss in conference action.
With the 2013 CAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament beginning on November 2nd, St. Mary's tournament seeding is still up in the air. The Seahawks can either finish second or third in the standings depending on tomorrow's results – York College of Pennsylvania at Penn State Harrisburg and Wesley College at Salisbury University.
Christopher Newport (13-3-1, 7-1-0 CAC) outshot the Seahawks (7-8-3, 6-2-0 CAC) by a 23-9 margin, but only six were on target for the Captains. CNU also posted an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Seahawks struck first in the half as Latour put back the rebound from sophomore forward Jess Konecke's (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) shot, hitting the right side netting at 26:31 for an early one-goal Seahawk lead.
Christopher Newport really picked up the pressure, dominating the Seahawks 10-1 in shots and keeping the ball on its offensive side of the field for the majority of the second half.
Senior forward Bupe Okeowo (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) finally broke through the St. Mary's defense in the 81st minute as Okeowo one-timed a cross from first-year midfielder Victoria Perry (Northport, N.Y./Woodgrove [Va.]) to force overtime.
Junior midfielder Joy Piirto (Charlottesville, Va./Albermarle) gave CNU the best opportunities to win in regulation but one shot was blocked and her second one was saved by senior goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) at 86:19.
Wirtz finished the game with five saves while first-year Haley Casanova (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) made three stops for the Captains.
