Box Score

Montclair, N.J. The No. 16 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team had a tough second quarter and the Seahawks came out on the short end of a 13-11 non-conference loss at host No. 14 Montclair State University Saturday afternoon.

First-year attackman Patrick Regan (Wilmington, N.C./Cape Fear) paced the St. Mary's offense with two goals and an assist while seniors Ben Love (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) and Gordy Long (Monkton, Md./St. Paul's School) and junior midfielder Will Lerch (Lothian, Md./Calverton) each scored two goals.

Montclair State (6-0) edged the Seahawks, 4-3, in the first quarter. Two Red Hawk goals sandwiched a Love goal for a 2-1 MSU lead at 5:34. St. Mary's netted two consecutive goals for its only lead of the game, 3-2, at 4:23. Montclair notched two goals in a minute for the one-goal lead. It was all Red Hawks in the second period as Montclair State tallied a 6-2 run for a 10-5 halftime advantage.

Sophomore attackman Brett Mangan (Maplewood, N.J.) commanded the Red Hawk offense with six goals on nine shots while senior attackman Sam Morrissey (Hackettstown, N.J.) contributed three goals and an assist. Fellow attackman Don Finn (Wall, N.J.) dished a game-best three assists.

St. Mary's (3-3) came alive in the second half, outscoring the hosts 6-3 over the final two quarters but it was not enough to overcome the five-goal deficit faced by the Seahawks at halftime. In the third period, the Seahawks tallied three goals in a five-minute span and headed into the fourth stanza down 11-8.

Senior attackman Stew D'Ambrogi (Severna Park, Md./Severn) closed the gap to two at 10:42 before Montclair State responded with back-to-back goals for a 13-9 edge at 3:03. St. Mary's found the back of the net twice in the final 2:31 for the 13-11 final.

MSU edged St. Mary's, 37-34, in shots and posted a 35-32 margin in ground balls while the Seahawks dominated face-offs with a 22-of-28 effort. Senior midfielder Cody Tidwell (Cordova, Md./South River) went 14-of-18 at the X with career-best 10 ground balls while sophomore midfielder Teddy Secor (California, Md./Calverton) was 8-of-10 with a career-high five loose ball pickups.

Senior Zack Blewett (Darnestown, Md./Heights) made three saves in 27 minutes before sophomore Joey Casey (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) came in relief and picked up seven stops in his first game action of the season.

The Seahawks will get back to it on Wednesday, March 19th when St. Mary's faces No. 8 Denison University on neutral ground at the Severn School (Annapolis, Md.) at 1:00 p.m.
