St. Mary's City, Md. – Their first win of the 2013-14 campaign came Saturday afternoon as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team opened up Capital Athletic Conference play with a 7-2 win over York College of Pennsylvania.
The Seahawks (1-5, 1-0 CAC) began the match by sweeping all three doubles for a 3-0 lead, needing just two wins in singles action to wrap up their CAC-opening victory. And St. Mary's received those two wins right off the bat as juniors Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) rolled to straight-set triumphs at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
Junior Emily Skutnik (Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) helped York (1-4, 0-1 CAC) avoid the shutout with a hard-fought 2-6, 6-4, 12-10 win over sophomore Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) at No. 4 singles.
Sophomore Emily Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest) needed a tiebreaking set to get past first-year Darian Naill (New Windsor, Md./South Carroll) at No. 3 singles, winning 6-1, 1-6, 10-7.
Sophomore Megan Jones (Felton, Pa./Red Lion) notched the Spartans' second point with a 6-4, 6-2 win over sophomore Liza Moore (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) at No. 6 singles.
The seventh and final point for St. Mary's came off the racket of sophomore Kayla Baier (Ocean City, Md./Worcester Prep) as Baier posted a 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 win at No. 5 singles.
St. Mary's will look to make it two in a row tomorrow afternoon as Hood College visits the Somerset Tennis Complex for a non-conference match at 1:00 p.m.
