Washington, D.C. – It was nearly perfection for the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team Friday afternoon as the Seahawks dropped only two games in a 9-0 shutout of host Trinity Washington University.
Today's win put St. Mary's (5-6) back in the column following its tough conference loss to No. 21 University of Mary Washington on Tuesday.
The Seahawks blanked Trinity's (2-6) No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams before the Tigers' duo of senior Zubaydah Madyun (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore Ameenah Johnson (Washington, D.C.) took a game in third doubles action.
St. Mary's won the first four singles matches played – No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 singles – by identical straight set scores 6-0, 6-0 before Trinity's Madyun claimed TU's only game in singles action at No. 5 singles.
Sophomore Kayla Baier (Ocean City, Md./Worcester Prep) picked up her team-leading 10th singles victory of the season at No. 5 singles to improve to 10-4 overall while Baier and sophomore Emily Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest) notched their team-best fifth doubles win with their triumph at No. 2 doubles.
St. Mary's will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as the Seahawks welcome Capital Athletic Conference newcomer, Christopher Newport University, to the Somerset Tennis Complex for a league matchup at 1:00 p.m. on Senior Day.
