St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior captain Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) notched the only point for the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team Saturday afternoon as the Seahawks succumbed to an 8-1 Capital Athletic Conference loss at the hands of CAC newcomer, Christopher Newport University.
St. Mary's (5-7, 2-2 CAC) worked to take four games from Christopher Newport (9-10, 5-1 CAC), who is ranked ninth in the Atlantic South region by the ITA, in doubles action. Ramsey and junior Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) claimed three games as they battled the region's No. 15 doubles team, first-year Katie Carlson (Omaha, Neb./Ducheshe Academy Sacred Heart) and senior Jodi Noland (Berryville, Va./Clarke County) at No. 1 doubles.
The Captains went up 6-0 in the match through the completion of three singles matches before Ramsey helped St. Mary's avoid the shutout with her straight set win at No. 1 singles. She picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win over Noland.
Sophomore Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) won four games against first-year Brook Byrd (Toano, Va./Warhill) in the first set but fell 4-6, 0-6 at No. 5 singles.
St. Mary's will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as the Seahawks travel to the Eastern Shore to take on Salisbury University, who is ranked 14th in the Atlantic South region, in another conference match at 12:30 p.m.
