Salisbury, Md. – Sophomore Kayla Baier (Ocean City, Md./Worcester Prep) was the lone Seahawk to pick up a point at regionally-ranked Salisbury University as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision in Capital Athletic Conference action Sunday afternoon.
Baier needed a tiebreaker set for her team-leading 11th singles win at No. 6 singles. Senior Charlotte Urian (Salisbury, Md.) tallied a 6-4 win in the first set but Baier answered back with a 7-5 triumph in the second. She then dominated the tiebreaker set, taking the set, 10-2, for the match.
Salisbury (9-7, 4-2 CAC), who is ranked 14th in the Atlantic South region, posted a 3-0 lead following a sweep of the doubles matches.
Junior captain Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) took on her second regionally-ranked opponent in the last three matches in sophomore Natalie Savage (Port Murray, N.J.). Savage, who is ranked 12th in the region, won in straight sets but Ramsey won two games before the match was over.
St. Mary's (5-8, 2-3 CAC) will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as the Seahawks travel to western Maryland to square off against Frostburg State University in another conference match at 12:00 p.m.
