Frostburg, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team wrapped up their regular season Monday afternoon with an 8-1 Capital Athletic Conference win over host Frostburg State University.
The win clinched the fourth seed for the Seahawks (6-8, 3-3 CAC) in the 2014 CAC Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, which begins Saturday, April 19th with first round action. St. Mary's will host a first round match on Saturday but its opponent is dependent on tomorrow's result between York College of Pennsylvania and Penn State Harrisburg.
St. Mary's posted a 3-0 lead following a sweep of doubles competition. The Seahawks continued to roll through the match as juniors Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) and Baier all won their singles matches for a 6-0 SMCM lead. Baier's 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles gave her a team-leading 12th win for a 12-5 record.
Frostburg State (3-11, 1-5 CAC) avoided the shutout as sophomore Kaitlin Lemmert (Frostburg, Md.) tallied a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.
Sophomore Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and Rost won their matches to complete the Seahawks' conference match win. Ramsey and Rost's triumphs were their 10th singles win of the season.
