St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team earned the right Saturday afternoon to make their seventh consecutive appearance in the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament.
The fourth-seeded Seahawks (7-8) posted a convincing 8-1 victory over fifth-seeded York College of Pennsylvania (4-11) in first round action. During the regular season, St. Mary's had tallied a 7-2 win over the Spartans.
St. Mary's will now face top-seeded University of Mary Washington in the CAC semifinals on Wednesday, April 23rd. Match start time to be determined.
The Seahawks started the match with a 3-0 lead as York only traveled four players; therefore, defaulting No. 3 doubles as well as No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
Juniors Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) stretched the advantage to 4-0 with an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. An 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles by junior Lauren Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) and Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) secured the Seahawks' spot in the semifinals.
Stumpfig (No. 2), Ramsey (No. 1), and L. Rost (No. 3) all won their respective singles matches in straight sets, dropping only a combined five games.
First-year Mckenzie Krout (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) battled sophomore Emily Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest) at No. 4 singles for York's lone point. E. Rost notched a 7-5 win in the first set and another tight set ensued as Krout pulled out a 7-6 (8-6) victory in the second to force a tiebreaker set. Krout edged E. Rost for the win by a 10-7 margin in the tiebreaker.
