St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team brought the fight to No. 21 University of Mary Washington Tuesday afternoon in a battle of Capital Athletic Conference unbeatens. The Eagles came out on top with a 9-0 decision to clinch the top seed in the upcoming 2014 CAC Women's Tennis Championship Tournament.
Mary Washington (13-6, 6-0 CAC), who is ranked sixth in the Atlantic South region, swept all three doubles matches by identical 8-0 scores. Senior Lindsay Raulston (Franklin, Va./Southampton Academy) and sophomore Shelby Harris (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) are the No. 1 doubles team in the region and improved to 16-6 on the season at the No. 1 spot with their 11th straight win.
Junior Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) and sophomore Kayla Baier (Ocean City, Md./Worcester Prep) played two of the most competitive matches of the day in their respective flights. Stumpfig claimed five games from sophomore Mackenzie Smith (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) at No. 2 singles while Baier won six over sophomore Ashley Price (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) at No. 6 singles.
Junior captain Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) put forth a solid effort as well at No. 1 singles in taking a game from Raulston, who is ranked 12th in the region.
St. Mary's (4-6, 2-1 CAC) will be back in action on Friday, April 11th as the Seahawks travel to Washington, D.C. to take on Trinity (D.C.) University in non-conference action at 4:00 p.m.
