Box Score Arlington, Va. – The tough St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team blanked the Marymount (Va.) University Saints on Saturday afternoon on the road with a score of 4-0 to secure their seventh Capital Athletic Conference win of the season.
The win maintained St. Mary's (9-6, 7-1 CAC) in a tie with Christopher Newport University (13-3-1, 7-1 CAC) for first in the conference standings as both teams both have 21 points on seven CAC victories. If both teams win out, then Christopher Newport would be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming CAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament and St. Mary's the No. 2 seed as CNU holds the head-to-head tiebreaker.
The Seahawks will be on the road for their regular-season finale at York College of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, October 27 at 4:00 p.m. York (6-9, 4-4 CAC) is currently sitting in sixth with 12 points.
St. Mary's scored in the 30th minute of the game as junior midfielder Claire Kostelnik (Los Angeles, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) crossed the ball from the right side of the box to junior midfielder Caroline Rivera (Stuttgart, Germany/Alexander M. Patch American) who finished for St. Mary's first goal and a 1-0 Seahawk lead at halftime.
The Seahawks had 14 shots in the first half while Marymount (4-12, 0-8 CAC) had all three of its shots for the game in the first period. The Saints' goalkeeper, April Westmark (Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola), saved eight shots for the game; however, Westmark would fall short against the offensive fight brought by the Seahawks in the second half.
The Seahawks capitalized quickly in the second stanza when senior forward Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) scored her 16th goal of the season as Sawyer got past the Saint defenders and scored at 53:12. Swiftly after in the 58th minute, junior defender Morgan Rusinko (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) took ample advantage of a pass from senior forward Jess Konecke (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) for the three-goal cushion.
St. Mary's had five fouls to Marymount's seven with one foul being costly for the Saints. The Seahawks earned a scoring opportunity off a foul in the penalty box in the 79th minute to finish the game. Junior forward Ellen Airozo (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein) netted her first career goal as Airozo took the penalty kick for the Seahawks. She successfully found the back of the net and the Seahawks would finish with four unanswered goals for another successful win on the road.
